Why Gloves Are NOT Optional for Nail Technicians

Misinformation from the Mic: Why Gloves Are NOT Optional for Nail Technicians

Recently, I listened to a podcast where three individuals claiming to be educators stated that nail technicians shouldn’t be wearing gloves during services. Let me be clear: this is not only unsafe—it’s illegal in many states.

As licensed professionals, we are responsible for protecting ourselves and our clients. Wearing gloves isn’t a matter of personal preference or comfort—it’s a standard of hygiene, safety, and professionalism.

Not Wearing Gloves Can Spread Disease

In most states, it is mandatory to wear gloves during pedicure services. Why? Because failure to do so exposes you and your clients to serious infections and diseases, including:

Scabies

Warts (caused by HPV)

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)

Bacterial skin infections

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)

If you contract any of these because you didn’t wear gloves, you’re not just putting yourself at risk—you can unknowingly pass it on to every other client you touch. One small oversight can cause a chain reaction of infections.

Product Exposure = Long-Term Damage

Beyond the risk of disease, consider what constant exposure to products does to your skin. Every day, nail techs work with:

Exfoliating scrubs

Cuticle softeners

Callus removers

Lotions, alcohol, acetone, and disinfectants

These are chemicals. Repeated contact can cause over-exfoliation, skin cracking, rashes, and allergic reactions. Many of these issues fall under a condition known as contact dermatitis—and it’s more common than you think.

I know this firsthand. I used to work bare-handed until I developed allergies to multiple common products. Now, I have no choice. If I don’t wear gloves, I can’t work at all. I’m one allergic reaction away from having to retire and close my salon.

Gloves Are Your Insurance Policy

Wearing gloves doesn’t make you less skilled, less personal, or less professional. It makes you **smart**. It shows that you respect your clients and value your own health.

So to those who say gloves aren’t necessary—think again. It's time to set the record straight:

> Wear the gloves now, before your body makes the choice for you.

Stay safe, stay smart, and protect your future.
